Do not assume every feature is important. Treat each one as a question.
For example, a strip of timber between two fields may be a travel corridor. It could also receive constant farm traffic. A saddle may provide an easy ridge crossing, but deer have little reason to use it if it connects no useful food or cover.
At this stage, you are building a shortlist of areas to inspect. Trail cameras can also be considered now, but only in relation to a question. If a wooded corridor appears to connect bedding cover and food, a camera might later help determine whether deer currently use it. Ridges, benches, and saddles
In hill country, deer often use benches as easier routes across slopes. Saddles may offer lower crossings between high points, while ridge points can provide secure bedding locations.

After studying the property, walk the most promising areas and look for sign. The purpose is not to collect as many clues as possible. It is to determine whether deer are using the connections you identified.
Tracks can show direction and relative frequency of movement. Several fresh tracks on a trail between cover and food are more meaningful than a single print with no clear destination. Track size alone cannot tell you the exact age of a deer or when it will return.
Rubs confirm that a buck visited an area. A line of fresh rubs following a trail or terrain edge may suggest repeated travel, but one large rub does not establish a pattern.
Scrapes provide information about deer communication, especially during the pre-rut. Their value depends on location and timing. A scrape near secure cover or intersecting trails may deserve attention, but it does not guarantee daylight activity.
Freshness and context are essential. Old rubs and worn trails show historical use, while fresh tracks, droppings, and recently disturbed ground provide better evidence of current movement. Compare all sign with current food, cover, and hunting pressure.

Using Trail Cameras to Reduce Unknowns
On unfamiliar properties, trail cameras are also useful for learning where deer activity is concentrated.
A hunter may begin with several possible areas identified from maps and field scouting. Instead of assuming one location is best, cameras can help compare activity between different habitat types.

A mature buck appearing near a transition may lead you to examine nearby cover. A sudden drop in activity may encourage you to check food changes or alternative travel routes.
Trail camera data should update your understanding of the property, not replace it. The goal is not to build a complete map of every deer movement, which a camera cannot do. The goal is to make better decisions about where to scout, where to hunt, and when conditions have changed enough to adjust your strategy.
What Trail Cameras Can Tell You
Using trail cameras for deer scouting is most effective when every camera has a clear job. One may monitor a suspected travel corridor. Another may help assess deer activity near a changing food source. The value comes from the question being answered, not the number of photographs collected.
Cameras can provide information about:

Late season: Return attention to dependable food and secure cover. Deer are conserving energy and responding to accumulated hunting pressure. A food source may hold deer, but exposed activity may not begin until after dark.
