Why Does Live View Take 10–15 Seconds to Display Video with a Customer-Provided SIM Card?

When using a cellular trail camera with a customer-provided SIM card, you may occasionally experience a delay after connecting to Live View. The camera may connect successfully, but the screen remains black for about 10–15 seconds before the video appears. During this time, audio may already be available.

Once the video starts playing, Live View works normally.

Why does this happen?

This delay occurs during the Live View initialization process and is usually related to the actual cellular data connection quality during video stream setup.

We have reproduced this situation and analyzed device logs with our engineering team. The delay is not caused by the cellular signal indicator, but by the network performance required to establish and maintain the live video stream.

Why does 4-bar signal strength not guarantee fast Live View?

The signal bars only indicate cellular signal strength. They do not represent:

  • Data speed
  • Network latency
  • Connection stability
  • Data transmission quality

Even with a 4-bar signal, Live View performance can still be affected by:

  • Network latency
  • Packet loss
  • Network congestion
  • Unstable data transmission
  • Insufficient upload speed

During Live View startup, the camera may successfully establish the connection and transmit audio first, while the video stream requires additional time to initialize.

In short

A full cellular signal does not always mean a fast or stable data connection. A 10–15 second black screen delay during Live View startup is usually caused by network conditions during stream initialization, especially when using a customer-provided SIM card.

For the best Live View experience, we recommend using a SIM card with reliable cellular coverage and sufficient upload speed in your area.
