Firmware Upgrade Instructions for Non-Cellular Trail Cameras

This guide applies to non-cellular trail camera models and provides instructions for manually updating the camera firmware using an SD card. Updating your camera firmware to the latest version can improve compatibility, stability, and overall performance.

Before starting the update, please make sure to select the correct firmware version that matches your camera model and current firmware version. Firmware versions are not cross-compatible. Using an incorrect firmware file may cause the update to fail or, in some cases, may result in an unrecoverable camera issue.

If you are unsure which firmware version to use, please contact our customer support team before updating: support@gardepro.com

Please follow the steps below to complete the firmware update. You can also watch the following video for a reference guide. The video demonstrates the firmware update process on a WiFi trail camera, and the same steps apply to non-cellular trail camera models.

What You Will Need

  • A computer (Windows or macOS)
  • Batteries with sufficient power or a stable external power source
  • A USB cable (included in the package)
  • A reliable, high-quality SD card
  • The correct firmware file (.img) for your camera model

Step-by-Step Firmware Update Guide

Step 0 — Check Your Current Firmware Version (Very Important) #

⚠️ Before downloading any firmware, you MUST confirm your camera’s current firmware version.

Different hardware platforms use different firmware branches:

  • V2.xx firmware → can ONLY be upgraded to V2.xx
  • V3.xx firmware → can ONLY be upgraded to V3.xx
  • V6.xx firmware → can ONLY be upgraded to V6.xx
  • V8.xx firmware → can ONLY be upgraded to V8.xx
  • Firmware versions are not cross-compatible and cannot be upgraded across different version.

Installing the wrong firmware version may cause the camera to malfunction.

How to check your firmware version:

  1. Power on the camera
  2. Go to MENU → Settings → Version
  3. Check the Firmware Version displayed (V2.xx, V3.xx, V6.xx, V8.xx)

Step 1 — Download the Firmware #

Please select and download the firmware that matches your camera model below.

Notes:

  1. Please download only the firmware for your specific model.
  2. The firmware file will be named xxxx.img.
  3. If your computer shows a warning such as “This file may harm your device”, you can safely ignore it.

This file is an official GardePro firmware package used only for camera updates and is completely safe.

Step 2 — Prepare the Camera

  1. Insert the SD card into the camera and make sure it is fully seated.
  2. Turn the camera power switch to ON.
  3. Format the SD card in the camera
    1. Important: Formatting will erase all data on the SD card.
    2. Please back up any important photos or videos before formatting.
    3. This ensures the card is clean and ready for the firmware file.
  4. After formatting is complete, connect the camera to your computer using a USB cable.

Step 3 — Copy the Firmware File

  1. On your computer, open the camera’s storage (SD card).
  2. Copy the downloaded xxxx.img file directly to the root directory of the SD card.
  3. Once the file has been copied, safely close the camera storage and unplug the USB cable.

Notes:

  • Do not rename the file.
  • Do not place it inside any folder.
  • The file cannot be opened — just copy or move it to the camera storage.

Step 4 — Start the Firmware Upgrade

  1. Power the camera OFF.
  2. Press and hold the MENU button.
  3. While holding MENU, move the power switch from OFF → ON.
  4. The screen will light up, and the camera will automatically start the firmware upgrade.

⚠️ Do not power off the camera or remove batteries during the upgrade process.

Step 5 — Confirm the Firmware Version

  1. After the upgrade is complete, the camera will restart automatically.
  2. Go to MENU → Settings → Version.
  3. Confirm the firmware version: For example, V6.2.149 or V8.2.149. Make sure the firmware version matches your camera’s original firmware series (V6 or V8).

Important Notes #

  • Ensure sufficient power before upgrading.

Please make sure the camera has fresh batteries installed or is connected to a stable external power source before starting the firmware update.

  • Do not power off the camera during the upgrade.

During the firmware update process, do not turn off the camera, remove the batteries, or disconnect the external power supply, as this may cause the update to fail.

  • Use the correct firmware for your camera model.

You must download and install the firmware package that matches your exact camera model. Installing incorrect firmware may cause the camera to malfunction or behave abnormally.
