Why Are My Camera Photos or Videos Black and White at Night?

Yes, this is normal for trail cameras with infrared night vision.

When there is not enough ambient light at night, the camera automatically switches to infrared night vision mode. Since infrared light does not capture color like normal daylight, photos and videos taken at night will appear black and white. This helps improve image clarity and ensure better night-time visibility.

Further troubleshooting may be needed if you notice any of the following issues:

  • Photos or videos remain black and white during the daytime;
  • Night images are extremely dark, overexposed, or show unusual streaks;
  • The night vision range is significantly shorter than expected;
  • Night images are completely black and no details can be seen.

If the night-time photos or videos are clear and the subjects can be identified, black-and-white images are normal and indicate that the camera's infrared night vision is working properly.
