Why does my phone pick up the LEDs if they're invisible?

“Invisible” means the infrared light is invisible to the human eye, not that the LEDs are turned off. Your phone’s camera sensor can detect some infrared light that your eyes cannot see.

1. Why can't I see the LEDs at night?
The camera uses infrared LEDs, typically 850nm or 940nm, for night vision. Infrared light is outside the range of light visible to the human eye, so the LEDs may appear completely dark in total darkness.

2. Why can my phone see them?
Phone cameras use CMOS image sensors that can detect some near-infrared light. Although phones have an IR-cut filter to reduce infrared, some infrared light may still be detected, especially in dark conditions or when you point the phone directly at the LEDs.

You may see the LEDs as faint red, purple, or white spots on your phone screen. This does not mean the LEDs are emitting visible light or that the night vision is malfunctioning. It simply means your phone camera can detect light that your eyes cannot.
